Kapa Haka \ Gisborne Boys' High School

Tūranga Wāhine Tūranga Tāne

Tūranga Wāhine Tūranga Tāne is a culmination of Gisborne Boys' and Gisborne Girls' High School who represent the host rohe of Te Tairāwhiti and local iwi, Ngāi Tāmanuhiri, Rongowhakaata and Te Aitanga a Māhaki. Tūranga Wāhine, Tūranga Tāne has been performing at a national level since 2002 with the support of tutors, Logan Pōkai and Chrissy Moetara.

The rōpū was first established in 1959, founded by Albert Whaanga, Ngoi Pewhairangi, Henare Swan, Joe and Pōrua Green.

In 1998, Derek Lardelli took leadership of the combined group and gave them the name 'Tūranga Wāhine Tūranga Tāne'.

The group continues to promote te reo me ōna tikanga and was privileged to be hosts the 2014 Secondary Schools' Kapa Haka competition.

These values will always have a place in the future world of a young man. Our School motto: Virtus Repulsae Nescia; Courage Knows No Defeat; Toa Hinga Kore, Toa Mate Kore; and our School Values will be continually placed in front of him. He will always be challenged to achieve these school goals and “live” our school motto.
