A surfboard design and construction course has been running at the school since 2000. It is tutored by Sam Tanner, HOD of Technology and Graphics. The course operates during lunchtime and after school however, it has been part of Level 2 Technology and Level 3 Graphics since 2006. Students pay for their own materials, work in a state-of-the-art facility and are involved in all aspects of performance design, commercial graphics and fiberglass lamination. This is an innovative and unique development with students competing for course space.
Surfboard Design and construction a students perspective
This year I have had the opportunity for the first time to make a board of my own. I now appreciate why surfboards are so expensive. There are many materials and endless amounts of careful labor required in the construction of what appears quite a simple product. Every lunch time and tuesdays after school we put on our overalls and masks ready to shape, sand, glass.
I have enjoyed the experience. It has been Educational with Sam Tanner behind us all the way giving us tips and helping us out when wer there is a chance possible.
I have become familiar with the smell of resin with its strong putrid smell rally gets to you after a lunch time in the office. The smell wafts all over the school and is rally recognizable after a bit of fresh air.
Hard work pays off at the end of the year with a great result in hand.
Costs heaps although it’s cheaper than getting one custom made, reap the rewards. In the end you get the board that is best suited to you.
