6/8 GBHS First XV Rugby defeats Tauranga Boys' College and becomes Super 8 Rugby Champions for 2011.
TOURNAMENT WEEK 22 - 26 AUGUST
1st XI Football
The 1st XI Football team travelled to Papamoa for the Malcolm Cowie football tournament. The tournament boasted an impressive 24 teams from which the boys finished 5th.
Making the top 8 was no easy task with wins over Reporoa 3-0, Mt Maunganui 4-0, Wainuiomata 9-0, a 2-2 draw with Northcote and a last minute loss to Gisborne Campion 1-0. The goals came from a number of players including Josh Baty, Matthew Adams, Jared McMillan, Cheauxyan Maukau-McPhee, Jordan Peipi, James Bristow and Jesse Sadlier.
Having qualified for the Top 8, our next opponents Sancta Maria proved too strong, out muscling us on a less than desirable pitch 3-0 loss. This loss however influenced a more aggressive style of play in our last two games, with comprehensive wins over Onslow 3-1 and Papatoetoe 2-1.
Overall, the trip was a huge success, bringing the team closer together on and off the field. A special mention must go to Christian Tafau who received the Player of the Tournament. Finally I would like to thank Mr Davidson, Mr Ryan, Mr Sadlier and Mr Radburn who all played their part in ensuring the boys were organised and ready.
Surfing
Some 150 surfers from 40 schools spanning the North Island rolled into the west coast town of Raglan last week for the annual New Zealand Schools’ Surfing Championships. Raglan Area School Surfing Academy once again hosted the annual Schools’ Surfing Championships.
The top 4 surfers from each school determine who wins the School Team Championship. This Year, Gisborne Boys’ High travelled with a group of 9 surfers who competed in the U16 and U18 divisions supported by teachers Mr. Chapman and Mr. Gander. GBHS achieved some excellent individual results this year. Jacob Kohn (Team Captain) placed second in the U18 division final. Jamie Curle also made the final placing 4th. Jamie was a standout in the earlier rounds and was awarded “Best Newcomer” for the event.
In the U16 division Adam Grimson was 9th and Jules Craft 10th. Gisborne Boys’ High placed 5th equal in the teams event, a great team result to back up some excellent individual surfing.
The Gisborne Boys’ High Surf Team would like to thank the following for their support during this event,
GBHS Catering and Hospitality Department, Go Bus, Leader Brand, Gisborne Boardriders, Sequence Surf Shop, family and friends.
1st XI Hockey
The 1st XI Hockey Tournament was held in Napier. The tournament was a 16 team competition. GBHS won the three pool games against St Patricks (Wellington), Taradale High School and Francis Douglas Memorial College. The game against St Patricks was a particularly pleasing 5-3 win. St Patricks were the first round winners of the Wellington
Secondary Schools competition and had a NZ U18 squad member. The next game was a loss to Paraparaumu College. The last two games were a win against Rathkeal College and a draw against Kristin School. Kristin School finished third in the Auckland/North Shore Secondary School Hockey Competition so the 3-3 draw was an excellent result.
The Captain Monsul Dewes-Tupara was the most valuable player for the team.
The team behaviour was excellent on and off the field. Thanks to Patrick Dewes (retiring coach) and
Winnie Candy (manager) and Ngati Tupara (comanager).
GBHS U14 Rugby Report
U14 Colquohn Rugby Tournament Palmerston North 22nd-24th August 2011 Results
Vs. Palmerston North BHS- Lost 0-5
Vs. Rotorua BHS- Lost 5-12
Vs. Tauranga BC- Lost 0-24
Vs. Hastings BHS- Won 17-5
Vs. Wellington College- Lost 19-20
After 4 weeks of training the GBHS U14 Rugby side travelled to Palmerston North to take part in the Colquohn tournament hosted by PNBHS. We were the least prepared side in the tournament, as all the other schools had been playing together as a team since the beginning of the Rugby season. Despite this the side played with tremendous tenacity and commitment throughout the 3 day tournament.
The pick of the forwards was Angus McDonald and Taylor Hindmarsh. The player of the tournament for GBHS was fullback Cameron Fairbank. Cameron displayed brilliant counter-attacking skills from the back, using his blinding pace to cut apart the opposition defence. He also displayed fantastic defence skills making many fine cover tackles.
Despite the results the boys got a great insight into what the standard of Rugby is required at the highest Super 8 level, and this will hopefully galvanise them into training and preparing well for next years Rugby season.
The side were fortunate to stay at the Massey University campus marae. Staying together brought the side closer collectively as a unit. We were well looked after by 2 of our parents Ms Nancy Aupouri and Ms Andrea Waanga, for which the boys were most grateful for their assistance throughout the tournament.
The side was coached by Mr Arthur and Mr Jefferson.
First VX Report
The First Fifteen finished a successful season with a disappointing loss to Napier BHS in the final of the Hurricanes Schools Competition.
In recent weeks the school had won the Super 8 Rugby competition, for the first time since the Super 8 began in 1997, through an unbeaten run in the seven matches. This is a phenomenal effort considering the strength of the schools involved in the Super 8 competition. It included a brilliant win over Hamilton BHS (the Sannix World Champions) 32-6.
The school had qualified as one of the top four schools in the Hurricanes region and were drawn to play the Wellington Schools champion, Wellington College, in Wellington. After an exciting encounter and coming from 6-14 down at half time, GBHS won the match 25-21 and sealed a place in the Hurricanes region final.
The opponents for the final were Napier BHS who had defeated Palmerston North BHS in the other semi final. Again this illustrates the strength of the Super 8 and just how close the top three teams were in the Super 8 competition this year. A nail biting encounter went down to the wire with Napier eventually winning 21-23 in a spectacular final.
It was bitterly disappointing for the team to miss out on the Top 4, given that we had beaten Napier and eventual winners Kelston BHS in earlier encounters.
An exciting postscript to the season was the selection of Sheridan Rangihuna (halfback) and captain Conan Houkamau (hooker) in the New Zealand Schools Rugby Team.
These two along with Beaudein Waaka, Tamati Samuels, Penikolo Latu and Jonte Lexmond had all been selected for the Hurricanes Secondary Schools team earlier in the year.
Congratulations to all of them on their fantastic efforts.
Squash Report
Auckland was the host of the 27th New Zealand Secondary Schools Squash Teams Tournament 2011. Our team of Dylan Pahina, Chapman Kutia, Bruce Taiapa, Rios Moleta and Dallas Davis-Nepe, was managed by Christine Swann and coached by Hadfield Kutia. Gisborne Boys’ High School were one of 38 Boys teams represented. Our first and second round matches against Mt Roskill Grammar from Auckland and Whangarei Boys High School were comfortably won 5 games to 0.
The third round match against Auckland Boys’ Grammar was a crucial match with the winners going onto play the top seed Christchurch Boys’ High School. Bruce Taiapa and Rios Moleta both won their matches and at the start of the last match the scores were two all. Chapman Kutia was the last player to compete and he won his match to give the team a 3/2 win to take us through to top 4.
Our next game was against the top seeded Christchurch Boys’ High School. They had a very strong team of A2 and B1 graded players and our team were very competitive but lost 5/0. In the final round of games we met Palmerston North Boys’ High School who were seeded 3rd in the competition. Rios was up first going down 15/12 in the fifth to C1 Ashley Petterson. Bruce had a 3/1 win over his opponent B2 Luke Jones bringing the match scores to one each. Dylan had a hard fought match against A2 Regan Smith losing 16/14 in the third. Dallas had another hard battle losing 15/13 in the fifth. The final game was between Chapman and Sam Nash with Chapman playing some brilliant squash to win the match in five. The final match scores were 3/2 to Palmerston North.
The eventual winner was Christchurch Boys’ High School defeating Tauranga Boys’ College with Gisborne Boys’ High School placing 4th.
Golf
The GBHS team of Peta Westrupp (Captain), Danny Gibbs, Daniel Marsh and Taine Lincoln travelled to
the Tauranga Golf Course to contest the 2011 NZ Sec School champs. Even after a practice round our
team struggled to adapt to the shorter and tighter course and had a disappointing morning with scores
in the high 80s. Our best morning score was an impressive 83 from Taine Lincoln which included a 10
on one hole so the other 17 must have been played very well. Taine followed that up with 85 in the afternoon
to card the best total score of our four. Peta, Danny and Daniel all scored lower in the afternoon as they tried to overtake some of the teams. We finished 14th out of 14 but it was a valuable experience for Daniel Marsh and Taine Lincoln to see where they need to get to to aim for a top 10 or better finish. The top three schools were St Peters College, St Bedes College, followed by Westlake BHS who all played some intelligent and athletic golf which showed the fruits of hundreds of hours of practice. An excellent lesson in precision golf was also displayed by Cecilia Cho from Pakuranga College- currently ranked #2 woman amateur in the world.
Individual Success
Tayler Reid competed in the NZ Secondary Schools
Judo Championships in the July School Holidays.
He won Gold in the Men’s Under 55kg division.
Well done Tayler.
