2009 saw, after a long absence, the introduction of softball back into GBHS as a summer sport. Instigated and coached by Mr. Matt Clark, junior and senior players formed the new team. With the added benefit of Mr Anderson who displayed his all-round softball skills in training and on the diamond.
The BHS Cowboys aptly named by Mr. M .Clark has local historical significance as the name given to the WW2 C company soldiers Nga Kau Poi ( The Cowboys).
Pitted in the local senior competition with seasoned players provided a challenging introduction to its first year.
The team had the greatest opportunity to enter the National secondary schools softball level 2 competition held in Tauranga this year. With one win, a couple of very close games and a few losses, the experience at this level was invaluable for everyone involved. The boys also picked up the Best team award, well done, and Harley Roberts was chosen as MVP. The team will head of again to the 2010 Nationals being held in Whangnanui.
The region was fortunate this year to have Black Sox junior coach John Love bringing his knowledge and skill to the senior teams, and gave GBHS extra tuition over two days and no doubt scouted for talent.
The parent support team headed by Jane Edwards provided much needed backup, advice and parental needs for the boy, especially at the national competition. The team included Jane and Rio Edwards, JC, Api Takoko senior. A huge thanks from GBHS for your support and Help.
