Gisborne Boys’ High has a proud and long tradition of rowing. The school in conjunction with the Gisborne Rowing Club have in the last five years spent over two hundred thousand dollars on rowing boats and equipment, recently purchasing an eight at the end of 2008. The school rowers are a small, dedicated group who are always competitive in national regattas and punch well above their weight when compared to other schools whose rowing team’s number in the hundreds.
This year in 2011 Liam Cottle and Mark Langdon competed in the NZSS Maadi Cup rowing regatta at Lake Karapiro. There were over 123 schools competing at this regatta and approximately 2300 rowers. Liam and Mark competed in the U16 Novice pairs event. This was the first time that these boys had competed at this level before. Unfortunately the boys did not make the semis dipping out by 0.38 seconds.
Rowing practice is on Sunday afternoon at 2pm at Anzac Park during the rowing season. Any students interested in this great outdoor and social sport can contact the school for more information.
