What is Prefectship?
Prefectship is a recognised position of excellence that students can attain by being a positive role model, through demonstrating leadership qualities and excelling in academic, cultural and sporting pursuits.
The candidates will develop qualities that will assist them to become positive role models amongst their peers and provide them with a foundation to become future leaders. This process provides a guideline for candidates and outlines the expectations that are required in order to become a prefect, these are as follows:
- Commit time and effort to a leadership course
- Commit to a school/student support initiative
- Uphold the integrity of the schools mission statement
Process
Following is an outline of the process each candidate will need to undertake in order to become a prefect.
TERM 1
Week 1: Special Year 12 Deans Assembly
Year 12 students wishing to become Prefects will need to apply for positions by the specified cut off date/week. (see appendix 1)
Week 2: Meeting of selection panel
A meeting will be convened for the selection panel. The panel will include SMT, Year 12 Dean, Head Boy, Deputy Head Boy/s and 3 MU holders
Week 3: Notification of candidates
Successful candidates will be informed by the Principal. The candidates are then required to read and agree to a ‘code of behaviour’ which outlines the schools expectations of them. (see appendix 2)
Note – Unsuccessful candidates will be notified and feedback will provided if requested
Monitoring
All candidates will be monitored by the year 12 Dean and appointed SMT member. Areas for the Dean to consider as part of the monitoring process are as follows:
Attendance: Suggest a target rate be set e.g. (98% and all justified absences will not impact on the candidate)
3 A’s programme: Suggest continued justified referrals be grounds for removal from the candidates list. An initial warning should be issued to candidates when referrals become numerous and justified. This will be done from the Dean.
School/Student Support Role: An end of term meeting will be convened by the selection panel in order to review the remaining candidate’s progress. Candidates who are NOT meeting the required targets are considered for removal. Successful candidates will be informed by the Principal. Unsuccessful candidates will also receive feedback regarding their outcome.
TERM 2
Week 2: Leadership Camp (Mahanga)
The selection panel will meet to discuss the outcomes and recommendations of the camp. This is the Final cut off point. The successful candidates will be required to enroll in the leadership course (course site and provider yet to be advised). The monitoring of candidates attending the course will be managed by the Dean and SMT member.
TERM 3

- Leadership course outline
- Monitoring of course attendance and candidate outcome to be completed by the Dean and SMT member
- End of term meeting to be convened by selection panel to review the progress of all remaining candidates. All candidates who successfully complete the leadership course and comply with the Code of Conduct will be invited to be capped/pinned as school leaders
TERM 4
(Date/Week to be confirmed)
- All capped/pinned school leaders will be required to participate in the planning of their specific roles for the following year (2010) e.g. (Sports Council, Peer Reading, Mentoring Programme, Sports Coaches, Ball committee, BOT student rep)
- Senior Prize giving, school leaders become school prefects.
