Physical Education & Health

Physical Education at Gisborne Boys’ High School has a strong tradition, and that tradition continues today with a range of learning programmes that embrace today’s Health and P.E. curriculum.

All boys are timetabled P.E. as a compulsory part of their education.  Year 9 and 10 boys also receive lessons in Health and Outdoor Pursuits from their P.E. teacher.  The focus of these junior courses is to teach boys the value of staying physically active throughout life as well as examining a range of issues that may impact on their hauora/wellbeing now and in the future.

In the Senior School (Year 11+), boys can choose from a variety of courses in the P.E. and Outdoor Pursuits area, depending on their learning level.  NCEA Physical Education is offered at Levels 1 – Level 3; Outdoor Education at Levels 2 – 3 and an alternative P.E. Course is offered as one of the Gisborne Boys’ High School ‘Schools of Learning’ – the School of Sport.

GBHS and the P.E. Department have sport and recreation facilities second to none in the Tairawhiti area.  We have expansive grounds - 2 Rugby fields, 1 Soccer field and 2 other recreation fields, an Astro-Turf Hockey field / Tennis Courts, a 25 m heated Swimming Pool (soon to be partially covered), an existing Gymnasium (with plans for a second Gymnasium complex), Squash Courts and a Weights Room.

These facilities, along with our learning programmes, ensure that the Physical Education, Health and Recreational needs of all our students are met.
