Gisborne Boys High School celebrates the fifth year of our Whakairo Unit, a facility that has been catering for the demand of our Maori youth in the art of traditional carving and the modern contemporary methods.
There are three levels of Nga Toi Whakairo classes working from Level One Unit Standards in Year 11 up to level three Unit Standards in year 13. As the course has developed, we have been able to add extra unit standards into it to compliment the skills that are being achieved.
Our course enables our students to experience, to explore and finally to develop their ability in Maori art. Once we have studied and researched the traditional methods and patterns, we then develop our own personal design work .
We are now ready to create our own pieces, using a mixture of modern and traditional tools.
Once each unit of work is completed, it is displayed in a variety of spaces within the school community.
