It is the function of the Mathematics Department at Gisborne Boys’ High School to nurture and develop the mathematical knowledge and skills of the students who study the courses provided.
To achieve this purpose, the principal aims of the Mathematics Department are:-

to convince students that Mathematics is an essential and useful skill for everyday living and especially a skill they will require in the world of work.

to motivate students to study the discipline with application and industry by ensuring that the courses provided match the student’s current ability and effectively increase their self confidence for future study.

to provide programmes of learning that apply the essential skills described in the New Zealand Curriculum Framework – communication skills; numeracy skills; information skills; problem solving skills; social and co-operative skills; work and study skills. The mathematical processes described in the curriculum statement, namely number, measurement, statistics, geometry, algebra are the vehicles by means of which the essential skills are delivered.

to provide assessment strategies which are accurate, informative to teachers, parents and students alike, and which themselves are both summative and formative.

Innovations:
Year 11 – 13 Courses: Clearly structured to enable all students to attain a worthwhile qualification; either NCEA Levels 1-3 or New Zealand Certificate of Mathematics.
