Gisborne Boys’ High School’s Maori department offers Te Reo Maori to all students in every level. We create and develop an understanding towards Maori tikanga and its concepts. Opportunities are given to those who would like to choose Kapa Haka. Students are taught everything Maori within the environment of the classroom, e.g. Whakapapa, the importance of whanau, hapu, iwi. Marae protocol, waiata, whaikorero and its main topic of wairua. We offer our community full support. At the school there is only one language teacher, teaching the Maori curriculum and is responsible for the department.
The most dominant feature from the Maori curriculum would be to teach our students how important it is to know ‘Who are you?’ in whakapapa and Maori tikanga. We also give them the opportunity to be a part of Kapa Haka which is one of GBHS strongest activities for Maori students.
The department has resources that can equip the students to reach their potential and mana. To enhance the senior curriculum, community resources are used as speakers for Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Te Ao Hurihuri - in Hauora and others.
The levels taken at this school are:
Yr 9 Te Reo Maori
Yr 10 Te Reo Maori
Yr 11 Te Reo Maori - Level 1
Yr 12 Te Reo Rangatira One - Level 2
Yr 13 Te Reo Rangatira Two - Level 3
Yr 13 Te Reo Rangatira Three - Level 4
We give students the knowledge and full understanding of Maori culture and its tikanga.
