Hostel

Boarding at the Gisborne High Schools' Hostel is a positive educational option. We cater for students from both Gisborne Girls' and Gisborne Boys' High Schools and while we have a very close working relationship with these schools, we are an independent charitable trust.

The hostel offers stability, safety and an opportunity to develop skills beyond those offered in the home environment. Living with other students 24 hours a day helps to forge friendships for a lifetime. Learning how to live with others builds strong relationships and develops a tolerance for individual differences.

Prep time or supervised homework is compulsory at the hostel and is supervised in a controlled environment. Wonderful nutritious meals are prepared for the students by a dedicated staff and students are regularly asked to evaluate the meals and offer suggestions.

Rural students can come to the hostel knowing they will be well catered for. It is not too far for your sons and daughters to come home for the weekend or for you to come into town to the various sports fields to watch their progress and success. Don’t miss out on one of the most important times of your sons’ and daughters lives.

Educational issues, successes and triumphs, can be closely monitored and the schools are close by. The hostel is situated at the end of Desmond Road and can cater for up to 140 students. We have a group of international students however the majority of students come from the Tairawhiti and Eastern Bay of Plenty regions. It is the choice of the students and their families to board five or seven days. In the winter months students often choose to stay in on Friday nights for their sporting activities on Saturday morning while others elect to go home.

The hostel is a facility designed for students and managed by a team of staff dedicated and committed to providing a warm, friendly and disciplined atmosphere. We cannot replace parents but we provide a well-balanced and happy surrounding for our students.

The Hostel Administration Manager, Sally Rowell, and staff are prepared to take expressions of interest from parents wishing their children to begin boarding at the facility. Competitive rates are offered which also includes meals and 24 hour, seven-day a week supervision. A variety of payment options is available, including an automatic payment facility, and the various options can be discussed with the Administration Manager.

Student Director, Vernice Waata-Amai, is dedicated and experienced, live on site and is always available to students needing assistance.

The team spirit and goodwill that goes into running a complex like this is great and we are very thankful for the wonderfully dedicated team we have here.
