INCUBATOR PROGRAMME
This is an exciting initiative designed to give students information about careers in Health. It has run successfully in Hawkes Bay for the past 2 years and was trialed at Lytton in 2008 with equal success. The rest of our secondary Gisborne Schools are lucky to now be offered the same programme. We had a presentation to senior students at school during term 1, where one of the creators of the programme, Robert Bull, informed students and staff about the course. Basically we have around 5 places only for our senior students to participate in a series of 6 informative sessions, delivered by staff from Gisborne Hospital. It may be stories from the Ambulance team, or a Theatre Nurse, a Cardiologist or a Radiographer or any one of the many different areas within Health. This is supported by access to an interactive website where students can gain information and ask anything they like, getting answers on-line from a diverse range of staff. Our students will be involved in conjunction with GGHS and Ngata College for 6 sessions over the next 3 terms for about 1 1/2 hours per session.
LAW AFTERNOON
Friday 6th August 1.30 – 2.30 in the Gisborne Boys’ High School Library
Professor Henaghan from Otago University will be visiting our school to speak to interested staff, students and parents. If you are considering Law as a career option this presentation will be well worth attending.
NEXT HOLIDAYS – End of Term 3
Navy Adventure Challenge. We are taking applications now from high profile Yr 12 and 13 students who would like to experience first hand what being in the Navy would be like. The week will expose the students to the roles and responsibilities of your Naval Officers. The NAC will suit those intending further tertiary studies in the BA, BCom, BBS, BSC, BE and BTech degrees which are offered to officers. A high level of fitness is required and you must be a team player, be practical and have a keen interest in what the Navy has to offer.
NAVY NEWS
The Navy were very busy in term 2. First there was the Navy Adventure Challenge during the first holidays where Ryland Jackson and Levi Kemp spent 5 days of their holidays checking out what really happens in the Navy, at the Devonport Naval Base. Both students excelled themselves and thoroughly enjoyed their week. Surprisingly they even enjoyed the 6 am run or swim! They were able to check out the different careers available in the Navy, took part in physical training exercises and simulations with the Bomb Squad, Navy divers and navigational exercises. A great experience for them both.
The Navy then came to Gisborne and several of our young men took the opportunity to spend some time aboard. Ryan Gordon and Sam Leach were privileged to be selected to join the officers for breakfast and were ferried out in the RHIB to the HMNZS Resolution. They both enjoyed their foray into the world of the Navy and are thinking about the options presented to them.
The following Monday Ryland Jackson, James MacGregor, Jacob Cottle and David Tamanui boarded the Resolution and after having the grand tour, sailed along with students from Lytton, Tolaga Bay Area School, Girls’ High and Campion College to Tolaga Bay. They were treated to a delicious lunch, a full rescue exercise with a BUOY overboard (not a boy!), a fire fighting demonstration and a trip in from the ship to the Tolaga Bay wharf on the RHIB! I hear it is a very interesting experience getting into the small rubber dingy (RHIB)! You need to time it just right in the peaks and troughs of the waves! Luckily no one got wet!
A further group of students were able to tour the ship in dock and get some insight into this type of career. A great week all round.
AIRFORCE CHALLENGE
Richard Taylor and Michael Rogers were successfully nominated to spend 5 days at Ohakea Air Base in Palmerston North in the April holidays where they were dined, shown all the different careers available and participated nightly in activities aimed at Leadership skills and team building. Richard reports that one of the activities they did involved pulling a plane in teams and competing for the fastest time! They were also lucky enough to get a flight in a helicopter! I wonder if I am too old to go on the next Challenge . . . .
VISIT TO WAIKATO UNI, BOP POLYTECH AND WINTEC
Noel Craft took a group of 11 students to Waikato to check out the University and Polytechnic. As usual Waikato turned on a superb day and students were treated to a lavish choice of lectures to attend, food to eat and contacts to be made. Next trip is southward to Massey and Victoria University plus EIT, UCOL and Weltec on 26th August.
OUTSTANDING IN THE FIELD
Mr Hunt took a group of 11 enthusiastic students out to Turihaua Station to the third annual Agriculture open day. It was a great day with plenty on hands-on farming chores to experience, including dissecting a sheep, drenching, crutching, weighing and the “teen farmer” competition to conclude the day. This is a great opportunity to have a look at farming at its best, the chance to crutch, weigh and drench; and obtain information about related careers like Stock Agent, Trucking, Fertiliser, Vet Science and more.
TRIP TO TE ARAROA WITH MR KEEFE’S YR 10 BOYS
We had a wonderful trip to Te Waha o Rerekohu School at the end of June to visit “Opshoons” the careers day put on by YTS. The boys were able to have hands-on experience with a wide variety of career possibilities, from being an Apiculturalist to a career in the Forces, and even a Beauty Therapist, but this didn't’t interest them! I wonder why! The boys were a delight to have on board and got heaps out of the day. Thanks to our seniors - Josh Renner, Brenden Ewart, Hori Katipa and Dean Hihi for helping out with the career stalls for the day.
INZONE BUS
The Inzone bus was here at the end of Term 2. We targeted Year 10 students this year to get them thinking about subject choices and possible directions for Year 11. Those seniors who wanted to look through were also able to. The bus is set up with 22 computer pods showing careers from any different industries. Army, Navy, Airforce and Police are always the most popular pods to check out, but quite a few of our boys were interested in Accounting, Forestry, and Roading industries also. There is plenty of scope to have a good look and challenge career ideas.
FIRST AID
Some students have completed a First Aid course this term. We are planning on running another one next term, so boys, listen out for the notices if you want to get your First Aid certificate. Very handy in the workplace!
CONGRATULATIONS TO . . . Dennis Nepia who has been accepted into the Navy; Nikolae Montgomery who has been offered a full time position with Juken NZ Ltd. Nikolae has been on Gateway with Forestry for the past 18 months.
TRIP TO WELLINGTON – EIT, MASSEY, VICTORIA AND MASSEY WELLINGTON
Mr Craft is putting the final touches to the preparations for the Wellington Trip on 27th and 28th August. The boys will take in EIT, UCOL, Massey, Victoria and Weltec. It is still to be decided whether this is a two or three day trip. Letters will go home shortly, to students who have indicated their interest. Please contact Noel Craft for more information on this trip.
