Choir

The Gisborne Boys’ High School Choir has developed into an inspiring group of young men over the past three years thanks to Andrew Ulugia who is the current choir master. .

In 2006/2007 we performed at the Big Sing Choral festival and received a Judges choice award. In 2008 the boys were asked to give up the second week of their school holidays in order to practice for a local concert to showcase their talent. We had a great time at Jack Richard’s (former GBHS Student) beautiful home which he kindly lends to us on an annual basis. On the week leading up to the event we appeared on the front page of the Gisborne Herald and sang at a number of Primary Schools including Central School, Te Wharau School, Wainui Beach School, Awapuni School, Gisborne Intermediate and Ilminister Intermediate. We also performed at Leighton House which was fantastic.

‘A Night of Song’ was performed at the Lawson Field Theatre with resounding success in 2008 with tickets selling out in just a day!

Additionally, the choir sang at the final of the Lochore Cup and their rendition of the National Anthem was widely praised by the Rugby Union and the Sky Television commentators.

2009 is shaping up to be a busy year with 34 boys signing up to the choir with a mixture of 1stXV, 1st X1, Soccer, Rugby Rowing, Kapa Haka and volleyball boys. We have already sung for numerous local charities and we have two nights booked at the War Memorial Theatre on October 9/10 for another local concert.

These young men are true role models for all young people and they create a positive ethos for  others to aspire to.
