CAREERS INFORMATION AT GBHS
Year 9
Through the Social Studies department, Mrs Christine Swann Anderson has developed a brief introduction to career education. A four week module on Employment and Work Skills is incorporated into the social studies curriculum.
Year 10
The Careers programme for Yr 10’s has been developed around the “Career Kete” package under the guidance of Mr Tim Gander. The Career Kete is designed to support career education activities in secondary schools, with a focus on students who are developing a learning and career plan. Working in conjunction with this we include an introductory lesson in the Career Suite at school (situated at ‘Tahunga’ at the back of the school) where the boys meet Mr Craft the Careers Advisor and Mrs Bishop Careers Assistant and Gateway Coordinator. Students will participate in a workshop aimed at introducing them to the world of work. Mr Gander ensures all students visit the computer rooms and experience both Choices; which suggests some career options in response to the way they answer questions on interest etc; and Career Services which is a very comprehensive site available to everyone online at www.careers.govt.nz
Additionally they will all complete an LCP (Learning Career Plan) which will form the basis of their subject choice for Year 11.
Year 11
Year 11 students will have 1 to 1 interviews with Mr Craft, the Careers Advisor. The first interview is to re-examine the LCP and to encourage students to remain focused for their first NCEA year. The students will have access to the CHOICES career programme through our computer pods and ongoing links to many information sites about all aspects of vocations e.g. www.careers.govt.nz
Year 12 and 13
Year 12 and 13 students will also have individual interviews to make sure pathways are clear and guidance is available. Liaison people from Universities, Polytechnics, the Armed Services and ITO’s from all industry groups are co-ordinated and students are encouraged to attend presentations relevant to their aspirations. The Career department works alongside the Gateway programme managed by Sally Bishop. Selected students who have expressed interest and demonstrated the right qualities for assistance are given the opportunity to be linked into a work placement and training arrangement with selected work places.
We also handle job vacancies and part-time work.
ALL YEAR LEVELS
The Career teacher, Mr Noel Craft, is available for an interview either by personal request or at scheduled times through a booking sheet in “Tahunga”
