CAREERS INFORMATION AT GBHS
Year 9
Through the Social Studies department we have developed a career programme to give students an introduction to Career Education. This programme will cover units of work around the changing world of work, values, skills and personal qualities. Students will be given a clearfile for their careers work which will stay in the careers office and follow them through their school life.
Year 10
The Year 10 unit on careers will be taught in term 3, through the Social Studies department, prior to students beginning the subject selection process. This unit is aimed at helping the boys to gain a better understanding of themselves, their employment preferences and career information in order to make successful transitions to the senior school. All students will have access to the career services website and will complete the online quiz, Careerquest which can help define interests and job ideas. The website www.careers.govt.nz is an excellent one for everyone with a wealth of information available.
Year 11
Year 11 students will have 1 to 1 interviews with Mr Craft, the Careers Advisor. The first interview is to re-examine the LCP and to encourage students to remain focused for their first NCEA year. The students will have access to Careerquest, through our computer pods and ongoing links to many information sites about all aspects of vocations e.g. www.careers.govt.nz
They are really encouraged to make use of these sources of information. Comments by people in the jobs describing what is involved and why they enjoy their field of work can trigger a response in students searching for a direction.
Year 12 and 13
Year 12 and 13 students will also have individual interviews to make sure pathways are clear and guidance is available. Liaison people from Universities, Polytechnics, the Armed Services and ITO’s from all industry groups are co-ordinated and students are encouraged to attend presentations relevant to their aspirations. We are continually trying to source relevant presentation into subject specific senior classes e.g. Lincoln University gave a presentation on possum control to senior biology students. The Career department works alongside the Gateway programme managed by Sally Bishop. Selected students who have expressed interest and demonstrated the right qualities for assistance are given the opportunity to be linked into a work placement and training arrangement with selected work places.
We also handle job vacancies and part-time work.
