Courses and Subjects

At Gisborne Boys’ High School we want to make your son a successful learner. We will provide a wide range of learning opportunities so that he can develop skills that are important to him and to his future. We all learn in different ways. We will explore teaching in ways that enable him to develop his personal skills and qualities.

Gisborne Boys' High School offers a balanced curriculum that incorporates a wide range of conventional school subjects, as well as a variety of non-conventional subjects.

We have been accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority to assess against the New Zealand Qualifications Framework.

The school aims to meet the wide variety of educational needs and interests of its students and offers them appropriate courses of study to enable them to achieve their potential.

In choosing subjects, students should pay attention to their own abilities, current interests and possible future careers. They will be given the opportunity to discuss proposed courses with Form Tutors, Deans, the Careers Adviser and other specialist Staff.

For prospective Year Nine (Form Three) students there are Course Advice Days scheduled in August and November of the preceding year. The student and his parents, or caregivers, are given the opportunity to attend an interview to select an appropriate course for Year Nine and onwards.

Overseas students benefit from our English as a Second Language (ESOL) courses. They are also integrated into our mainstream courses and are taught about the New Zealand way life.

All Year 9 and 10 students take part in the School Reading Programme, on four occasions per week. It is aimed at improving literacy, encouraging reading as a habit and fostering reading as being important and enjoyable.

We will give your son confidence in his own ability. We will promote and foster self discipline and self-responsibility. It is part of the growing process. At Gisborne Boys’ High School we will support our students in all facets of their learning and ensure that they have a safe, caring and well-resourced learning environment.
